This Killer was not a boy. If we can’t be children when we’re killed by the police and the government, why does this murderer get to be a twenty-year old BOY

Exactly. If they’re willing to try Black boys as adults in crimes at 15 years old (like they did my friend’s brother), then this TWENTY-FOUR YEAR OLD MAN IS A D*MN ADULT. Sh*t.

Trayvon Martin certainly wasn’t portrayed as an adolescent by media sources. It’s disgusting.

Maybe put it on a canvas instead of someone’s property, and we can all be happy.

who paying for these canvases or the art programs so these kids can have that? Why should it matter if these run down buildings that never get fixed up anyway get graffiti’d?

Therein lies the issue. Art programs, both visual and performance based, are the first programs to be cut. Canvas ain’t cheap. Neither are the supplies. Much of the graffiti that takes place IS on buildings that are run down. The gov’t didn’t place any value on these properties and yet get pissy with dudes “vandalizing” their shit. You can’t have it both ways, ya dig.

My father was a garment contractor in LA. In the late 80s, he owned the building where he had his factory. He thought it would be a cool idea to commission local graffiti artists, usually young Black and Latino men looking to stay out of trouble, to paint murals on his buildings. After all, he runs a garment design/manufacturing company, and creative signage is great advertising.
One day, he showed up to the building and the city just painted over the murals without permission or notice.
First, the city told him he couldn’t have graffiti art on HIS building because it brought down property value. After he complained, then they said: ok you can do this, but you need a permit. After he got the permit, then the city said: ok, but you can only use these artists.  Of course, these artists were all White graphic design students from USC, and of course they charged 3x more.
There is a prejudice against this type of art, and it’s racial.  Banksy vandalizes folks buildings all the time, and folks treat him like the Messiah. He ain’t doing nothing new that Black and Brown folks haven’t done for decades.

Arizona Rep. Calls Constituent a "Baby-Killer"

by Robin Marty

The Arizona Senate has passed one of the most sweeping omnibus anti-choice bills in the nation, and it is now heading back to the House for a vote. One constituent, hoping to urge her state representative not to approve the bill, decided to reach out to the full legislature via email.

Republican Representative Jack Harper decided to respond.  And he called her a “baby-killer.”

The only “laughing stock” in Arizona is the Democratic Party that has lost seats in the state legislature for five consecutive election cycles. Maybe you should change your baby-killer message. Why don’t you move back to China where your “party” controls the message by force.

Jack

State Representative Jack Harper

602-926-4178

jharper@azleg.gov

The email was confirmed to be in fact written by Rep. Harper, who refused to do an interview with local television stations but admitted to writing it.  According to Harper, he was responding to what he believed was her advocating “aborting down syndrome babies” which he claimed is “out of step” with what “mainstream” Arizona voters believe.

He’s on Twitter.

Wow. State and local politicians are endless fountains of garbage spew. And they keep showing us over and over again how they (and anti-choicers generally) really feel about people who want or need abortions.

Um, did anyone else notice the part where he told her to “go back to China”? Wtf…

What Everyone Should Know About Trayvon Martin (1995-2012)

thepoliticalfreakshow:

On February 26, 2012, a 17-year-old African-American named Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in Sanford, Florida. The shooter was George Zimmerman, a 28-year-old white man. Zimmerman admits killing Martin, but claims he was acting in self-defense. Three weeks after Martin’s death, no arrests have been made and Zimmerman remains free.

Here is what everyone should know about the case:

1. Zimmerman called the police to report Martin’s “suspicious” behavior, which he described as “just walking around looking about.” Zimmerman was in his car when he saw Martin walking on the street. He called the police and said: “There’s a real suspicious guy. This guy looks like he’s up to no good, on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around looking about… These a**holes always get away” [Orlando Sentinel]

2. Zimmerman pursued Martin against the explicit instructions of the police dispatcher:

Dispatcher: “Are you following him?”
Zimmerman: “Yeah”
Dispatcher: “OK, we don’t need you to do that.”

[Orlando Sentinel]

3. Prior to the release of the 911 tapes, Zimmerman’s father released a statement claiming “[a]t no time did George follow or confront Mr. Martin.” [Sun Sentinel]

4. Zimmerman was carrying a a 9 millimeter handgun. Martin was carrying a bag of Skittles and a can of iced tea. [ABC News]

5. Martin weighed 140 pounds. Zimmerman weighs 250 pounds. [Orlando Sentinel; WDBO]

6. Martin’s English teacher described him as “as an A and B student who majored in cheerfulness.” [Orlando Sentinel]

7. Martin had no criminal record. [New York Times]

8. Zimmerman “was charged in July 2005 with resisting arrest with violence and battery on an officer. The charges appear to have been dropped.” [Huffington Post]

9. Zimmerman called the police 46 times since Jan. 1, 2011. [Miami Harald]

10. According to neighbors, Zimmerman was “fixated on crime and focused on young, black males.” [Miami Herald]

11. Zimmerman “had been the subject of complaints by neighbors in his gated community for aggressive tactics” [Huffington Post]

12. A police officer “corrected” a key witness. “The officer told the witness, a long-time teacher, it was Zimmerman who cried for help, said the witness. ABC News has spoken to the teacher and she confirmed that the officer corrected her when she said she heard the teenager shout for help.” [ABC News]

13. Three witnesses say they heard a boy cry for help before a shot was fired. “Three witnesses contacted by The Miami Herald say they saw or heard the moments before and after the Miami Gardens teenager’s killing. All three said they heard the last howl for help from a despondent boy.” [Miami Herald]

14. The officer in charge of the crime scene also received criticism in 2010 when he initially failed to arrest a lieutenant’s son who was videotaped attacking a homeless black man. [New York Times]

The Martin case had been turned over to the Seminole County State Attorney’s Office. Martin’s family has asked for the FBI to investigate.

Atheists ‘Slaves Obey Your Masters’ Billboard Raises Tempers In Pennsylvania
The billboard is down, but the issue’s not gone. A billboard erected in one of the city’s most racially diverse neighborhoods featured an African slave with the biblical quote, “Slaves, obey your masters.” It lasted less than a day before someone tore it down. Now, the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission is investigating and is meeting with both the atheists who sponsored it as well as leaders of the NAACP who found it offensive and racially charged. The atheists behind the sign said they were trying to draw attention to the state House’s recent designation of 2012 as “The Year of the Bible” — an action by lawmakers that the atheists have called offensive. But there were concerns that erecting such a billboard is playing with fire. “If this had been Detroit, there would have been a riot,” said Aaron Selvey of Harrisburg, who visited the billboard site last Wednesday (March 7), the day after the sign was put up and later torn down. “We don’t want things to escalate into violence or community tension, so we try to address situations like that right away,” added Shannon Powers, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. “We would not recommend tearing down because it could lead to escalation. It hasn’t, and we’re tremendously thankful for that.”

Police! Y U SO BRUTAL?!
This is horrifying. Apparently after a football game, a group of men/boys performed a haka (polynesian dance) to support their team. The police for some reason were provoked into using mace, batons, and physical force.

The person who posted the video says:

At the Union High School football game in Roosevelt Utah. These polynesian boys had traveled to Roosevelt to support family members that were playing on the team. after a game well played but our team still lost. these family members got together and decided to perform the haka for the team to boost their morale and show them we support them. So the boys waited for everyone to get off the field and all that were left on the field was our team and the opposing team that was on the other side of the field in their team huddle. so as our team was walking up the fans started performing the haka….. everyone was enjoying it and watching. as soon as the police officer said to make a hole parents, players and coaches were telling the police officers that it was okay to let them finish. but as the video shows the police didn’t care and still pulled out mace and batons and used it on the boys. children, elderly, and others were sprayed. this was a huge overreaction by the police and physical force was not needed since these boys/men were not threatening ANYONE!!

Yahoo! News:

The police action came after a pair of officers unsuccessfully attempted to disperse the dozen or so performers who were blocking an exit after the Union-Uintah game Thursday night, theDeseret News and Salt Lake Tribune reported.
A form of the Haka has been popularized by rugby players in New Zealand who chant, beat their chests and gesture aggressively before matches. The Maori tradition also can include fierce facial expressions. Haka are now performed at football and rugby games around the world.
The group in Roosevelt, a town of 8,000, had traveled about 125 miles east from the Salt Lake City area to watch a relative play his final game for Union, which lost to rival Uintah and finished the season without a victory.
The group reportedly was trying to boost Union’s morale with the Haka as the players left the field.
Spectators, coaches and players told police that everything was fine and they should let the men perform, Jessica Rasmussen said, but officers asked them to make room and started using pepper spray.
Rasmussen said she and other bystanders also got spray in their eyes, ears and mouths.
Union fan Jason Kelly said the way police reacted was an embarrassment to the community of Roosevelt.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Kelly said. “It was totally unprovoked.”
Police said the incident is under investigation, and anyone wanting to lodge a complaint should contact the department.

Troy Davis to be Executed on September 21st: Help Stop Troy Davis' Execution Now (If you were appalled during the Republican "debate" when the audience applauded the mention of the death penalty, then here's a positive action you can take in response.)

classicsalvation:

fireinfreetown:

afrosoul:

“The state of Georgia has set Troy Davis’s execution date for midnight on September 21st, just two weeks from today.

This is our justice system at its very worst, and we are alive to witness it. There is just too much doubt.

Even though seven out of nine witnesses have recanted their statements, a judge labeled his own ruling as “not ironclad” and the original prosecutor has voiced reservations about Davis’s guilt, the state of Georgia is set to execute Troy anyway.

Time is running out, and this is truly Troy’s last chance for life.

But through the frustration and the tears, there is one thing to remain focused on: We are now Troy Davis’s only hope. And I know we won’t let him down.

There are three steps you can take to help Troy:

1. Send a message of support to Troy as he fights for justice on what may be the final days of his life:

http://action.naacp.org/LettersOfSupport

2. Sign the name wall, if you haven’t already. And if you have, send it to your friends and family. Each name means a more united front for justice:

http://action.naacp.org/Name-Wall

3. Make sure everyone knows about this injustice. Spread the word on Facebook and Twitter (using the hashtag #TooMuchDoubt) so that Troy Davis’s story can be heard. We still have a chance to save his life, but only if people are willing to speak out against injustice.

Today, the state of Georgia has declared their intention to execute a man even though the majority of the people who put him on the row now say he is innocent and many implicate one of the other witnesses as the actual killer. Now that a date has been set, we cannot relent. We must redouble our efforts.

Thank you. Please act quickly and forward this message to all who believe the justice system defeats itself when it allows a man to be executed amid so much doubt.”

Please do this!!

Ugh I don’t believe in the death penalty for this very reason! What happens when you execute someone and it turns out they’re innocent? Don’t say “Oh it’s highly unlikely” because it does happen. Plus who are we to say who gets to live and who gets to die? It’s just unfair.

So that’s my little rant.
